2019 Line up Highlights

The 2019 line-up has been launched and includes:

  • The launch of several new graphic novels, including Barking by Lucy Sullivan from Unbound, commissioned by the organisation.Festival patrons Bryan and Mary Talbot’s latest graphic novel, Rain, published by Jonathan Cape, also gets its official launch.
  • A celebration of Myriad Editions first Graphic Novel Competition.
  • Appearances from Rob Davis, illustrator and comic book designer Emma Price, Lucy Sullivan and Edward Taylor, the latter set to bring a wonderful Godzilla parody to Kendal in a new publication.
  • A showcase by SelfMadeHero, a publisher world-renowned for the range and quality of their European titles.
  • As part of its celebration of Belgian comics, this year’s Festival sees the launch of Joris Vermassen’s work, Mad with Joy, for the first time in English in partnership with the Flemish Literature Fundand published by Fanfare UK.
  • Also being launched at the Festival is an English language edition of Wij twee samen (“Us Two Together”) by Belgian artist Ephameron, a moving autobiographical story to be published by from Penn State University Press about her father’s struggle with dementia and the impact of the disease on the family.
  • The forthcoming 100th anniversary of the birth of Tom of Finland (born Touko Laaksonen), the world’s best loved queer artist, comics creator and gay icon will be celebrated with a special exhibition.
  • New works will be released by numerous Comics Clock Tower creators.

2018 Highlights

The 2018 line-up saw a range of fantastic events held in Kendal between 12th – 14th October including

  • Over 70 comic artists, writers and creators
  • Seven live draws over the weekend including the The (Legendary) Big Zombie Comic Draw
  • Over 35 weekend comic events
  • Five unmissable comic exhibitions
  • Five comic films over the weekend
  • The launch of Traces of the Great War, an ambitious co-commissioned comic anthology
  • An an epic debate on Friday evening: Marvel v DC. Which is best?

Each year the festival includes…

  • Live drawing from some of the biggest international comic artists
  • Talks, presentations and masterclasses
  • A comic marketplace – newly extended for 2018 with the big names and independent publishers
  • Comic signings with artists, writers and creators
  • A family-zone packed with activities for young, budding artists and comic art fans
  • Comic art exhibitions in our gallery spaces
  • International comic book launches – be the first to get your hands on the latest releases 
  • Comic-themed films – the festival has three state-of-the-art cinema screens
  • Comic art trail throughout the town of Kendal
  • The Friday Sessions with talks and debates featuring leading comic creators
  • Evening entertainment, music, comedy and cabaret
  • Fantastic selection of restaurants, cafés and pubs

 

The whole town takes part in the Comic Art Festival – with artistic displays in shop windows and a friendly, welcoming vibe. It’s an event not to miss!
