📍 Welcome to Kendal, Cumbria 🏔️ Nestled in South 📍 Welcome to Kendal, Cumbria 🏔️

Nestled in South Cumbria just 8 miles from Windermere, Kendal is a classic English market town with bags of charm — and one that deserves a spot on your list.

👀 What to expect: Winding cobbled streets, cosy independent shops, brilliant charity finds, and some seriously good local pubs.

🚂 Getting there: Jump on a direct train from Manchester Piccadilly or Oxford Road — it's only around 90 minutes and can cost as little as £15. Easy.

🐕 Dog friendly? Absolutely! Four-legged friends are welcome on the train, and there's a handy dogs day out guide over at northernrailway.co.uk if you need inspiration.

👣 What to do: No set route needed — just wander the cobbles, follow the river, and if you fancy something a little different, Kendal Castle is well worth the visit.

☕ Food & drink: Take your pick from pubs, cafés and restaurants to suit every mood. And whatever you do — don't leave without grabbing some Kendal Mint Cake! 🍬

Did you know that Postman Pat was born just around Did you know that Postman Pat was born just around the corner from here? In 1978, children’s author John Cunliffe was living at 32 Greenside in Kendal when he sat down at his old typewriter and conjured up one of Britain’s most beloved characters.

The little sub post office at 10 Greenside, just steps from his front door, is where John did his research, picturing Mrs Goggins cheerfully sorting letters behind the counter. The rolling hills and friendly folk of the Lake District’s Longsleddale Valley became the fictional village of Greendale. The post office closed in 2003, but today a commemorative plaque marks the spot for you to discover.
