The National Trust at Sizergh will open their doors this winter with lights, sound, story and
crafts.
Inspired by Sizergh’s wildlife and estate, visitors can immerse themselves in nature-themed light
and sound installations, designed by local artist Dan Fox and lighting designer Jezz Hellens.
Dan Fox, who runs Ulverston-based company Sound Intervention said:
‘This month-long installation is a really exciting opportunity for a new winter experience in South
Cumbria. I am really looking forward to working with the team at Sizergh to present some of my
existing pieces, a new large-scale work especially for Sizergh and curating work by other
fantastic, nationally recognised artists.’
For the first time, the house will open to visitors for the festive season. Be greeted with the
hustle and bustle of preparations, there’s still much for the servants to do. Deliveries of festive
goodies arrive by the crateload; a freshly felled Norway Spruce lays horizontal surrounded by
boxes of handmade decorations waiting to adorn it; and somewhere in the house there’s an
exotic feathered beast, set to cause havoc in the kitchen. Moments from Christmas Eves past
will transport the guests through the house, arriving back into the present day. From elaborate
feasting, cosy fireside games, and the scientific analysis of some mysterious bones found in
Exeter – there’s only one question on everyone’s lips: how did the turkey get here?
There’s also the chance to get into the festive spirit by getting creative in the Great Barn, with
self-led crafts for all ages. Take home something Christmassy, whether it’s a winter mobile
made from natural materials or a colouring sheet inspired by Sizergh’s winter wildlife.
After exploring the trail and the house, head back to the Visitor Centre for more Christmas
cheer. There’ll be warming seasonal favourites in the café, with hot chocolate, mulled wine and
mince pies galore. The shop is the perfect place to pick up stocking fillers and thoughtful,
locally-made gifts.
Sean Fletcher, Operations Manager at Sizergh, said:
‘This winter, Sizergh will be a place to escape to – whether you’re frazzled by the festive season
or just seeking a moment of magic away from the hustle and bustle. Community is at the heart
of Winter at Sizergh, and we’re so pleased that the trail and willow stags have been lovingly
designed and brought to life by artists and local school groups.’
Winter at Sizergh will run every day, 12-8pm, from 22 November – 24 December inclusive.
Tickets are £3 pp, and admission prices apply to non-members, which will be included in the
