Bowling Fell is the site of Kendal’s first castle, and the remnants of the wooden motte and bailey are still there today at known as Castle Howe. But it’s history doesn’t stop there – Kendal Civic Society believe that Bowling Fell was the first officially designated parkland in Kendal, making it an ideal place to relax for the historically-minded. It’s even thought that it was used as a bowling green for a game not dissimilar to boules.

 

In 1788 an obelisk was put in place to commemorate the Glorious Revolution of 1688, a war of English succession that was to shake up the nation’s religious, political and social balance for decades to come. A scheduled monument of historic importance, the location of the obelisk offers excellent views of the Kendal skyline.
