In a town surrounded by some of the UK’s most breathtaking natural landscapes, it’s easy to assume wildlife is thriving. But even here in Kendal, nature is under pressure. From vanishing hedgerows to declining bird populations, the signs are clear: we need to act.

That’s where Natural Kendal comes in — a growing community movement determined to reverse the decline and help nature flourish once again.

And this July, they’re inviting everyone to get involved.

Nature Recovery Comes to Life – Festival, Action, and Art

On 19th and 20th July 2025, Kendal will host its first-ever Nature Recovery Festival — a two-day celebration of wildlife, sustainability, and community-led action. From hands-on workshops to inspiring talks, this event is designed to reconnect people with nature, and to offer practical ways to protect it.

Expect a mix of:

  • Children’s activities and family-friendly fun

  • Wildflower planting, eco-crafts and expert-led sessions

  • Opportunities to learn how you can support wildlife in your own backyard

  • A special wildlife photography exhibition at Westmorland College, showcasing local talent and the stunning beauty of our natural surroundings

The festival isn’t just about admiring nature — it’s about empowering people to be part of its recovery.

Speak Up for Wildlife

In the run-up to the festival, Natural Kendal is also hosting a key event:
Act Now, Change Forever – a public gathering and open conversation with local MP Tim Farron, as part of the national nature and climate lobby.

📅 Wednesday 9th July 2025
📍 The Eddington Centre, behind the United Reformed Church, Highgate
🕔 5:00–6:45pm

This is your chance to share concerns, ask questions, and show that Kendal cares about nature’s future.

Celebrating Nature Through Photography

One of the festival’s highlights will be a stunning exhibition of entries from Natural Kendal’s Wildlife Photography Competition. The work submitted — from misty fells and shimmering tarns to garden foxes and mushrooms under moonlight — is a powerful reminder of what’s at stake.

Winning entries will be announced at the festival on 19th July at 12:00pm, and many of the photographs will be on display throughout the weekend.

The exhibition offers more than just beautiful images; it captures the essence of a landscape and community deeply connected to the natural world.

Find Natural Kendal at the Farmers’ Market

Beyond the festival, Natural Kendal has become a regular fixture at the Kendal Farmers’ Market (second and last Friday of every month). At their stall, you’ll find:

  • Sustainable, locally made goods

  • Nature-themed gifts and information

  • Tips on living greener

  • News of upcoming talks and events

It’s more than a market stand — it’s a space for conversation, connection, and community.

Why It Matters

The UK is one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world, and Kendal is not immune. One in six species is threatened with extinction. Yet, across Cumbria, there are farmers, planners, community groups, and families doing their part to turn the tide.

“We cannot take nature for granted,” says Craig Russell, Chair of Natural Kendal.
“Local wildlife is in decline. To bring nature back, we need to work together — across communities, sectors, and generations.”

Natural Kendal is standing up for green corridors in our towns, supporting nature-friendly farming, and calling for better environmental policies at every level. They believe — as many do — that Kendal can lead by example.

Be Part of the Change

Whether you’ve lived here your whole life or are just passing through, you’re invited to join in. Attend the festival, visit the stall, or simply take a walk through the woods and remember what’s worth protecting.

Because nature recovery isn’t just about saving wildlife — it’s about reimagining a town where people and the planet thrive together.
