Kendal’s high street has had a real lift this summer, with a handful of exciting new openings giving locals and visitors even more reasons to spend a day browsing the town. From coastal fashion to community craft, and even a brand new way to get active, here’s what’s new in Kendal right now.
Seasalt Cornwall – 7 Stricklandgate
One of the biggest arrivals of the summer is Seasalt Cornwall, opening its doors at 7 Stricklandgate — the prominent corner unit on Stricklandgate and Finkle Street, previously home to Yorkshire Bank and Virgin Money.
Founded in Penzance in 1981 by Don Chadwick, Seasalt began life selling traditional workwear and has since grown into a much-loved national and international clothing and accessory brand, with over 80 stores worldwide. Known for beautifully made womenswear and menswear inspired by the Cornish coast and its creative heritage, Seasalt’s ethos is all about quality pieces you’ll want to wear season after season.
This is Seasalt’s second Cumbrian shop, following its store in Keswick, and the team say they’re looking forward to bringing their coastal style to a new audience in the Lakes.
Maed & Co – Elephant Yard
Tucked into Elephant Yard, Maed & Co is a brilliant new addition for anyone who loves shopping local. It’s an artisan shop built around a simple idea: bringing local makers, crafters and independent businesses together under one roof.
Inside you’ll find handcrafted home décor, artwork, handmade jewellery, candles, gifts and locally produced treats — a carefully curated collection from talented small businesses across the area. It’s the perfect stop for a one-of-a-kind gift or a treat for yourself, and every purchase helps support the local creators behind it.
Performance Padel Kendal – Castle Mills, Aynam Road
Sport lovers, take note: Kendal now has its first dedicated padel centre. Performance Padel Kendal has opened at Castle Mills Business Park on Aynam Road, transforming around 19,000 sq ft of former warehouse space into a five-court indoor facility, complete with changing rooms, a café and reception area.
Padel: a fast-growing racket sport that blends elements of tennis and squash — is played in doubles on an enclosed court, with walls that stay in play, much like squash. It’s easy to pick up but full of depth for more experienced players, and with five indoor courts, it’s a great option whatever the weather. Bookings are open now, whether you’re after a casual game, lessons, or a full-on club session.
Moody Muu Boutique – Finkle Street
While it opened its doors back in March, Moody Muu Boutique is still one of the freshest additions to Kendal’s high street and well worth a mention. Relocating from Bowness, owner Janice Dickens has brought a stylish, one-stop shop for ladies’ fashion to Finkle Street. Think shoes, handbags, jewellery and accessories, all with a luxury feel at a price point for everyone.
