8th May 2025 marks a significant national milestone – the 80th anniversary of VE Day, commemorating the end of World War II in Europe. Across the country, towns and cities will be marking the occasion with a wide range of events, and Kendal is no exception.
Kendal Town Council is proud to support this important anniversary with a series of events designed to reflect, remember, and celebrate peace.
🇬🇧 Thursday 8th May – Acts of Remembrance & Unity
🕚 11:00am | Market Place, War Memorial
The day begins with a small but meaningful act of remembrance at the War Memorial in Market Place. The Mayor of Kendal and representatives from the Royal British Legion will be in attendance, honouring the fallen in a moment of reflection.
🕤 9:15pm | Beacon Lighting at Kendal Castle Hill
As daylight fades, Kendal Castle will become the backdrop for an uplifting community event. A performance by the Sea Cadets Band will set the tone before a beacon lighting ceremony at approximately 9:45pm, symbolising peace and hope.
The public are warmly invited to attend and are encouraged to bring along their own torches or light sources to help create a stunning visual tribute — a “light of peace and hope” visible across the town.
Please note: The timing of this event has been updated from earlier announcements to take advantage of the exceptional weather and clear skies forecast for the evening.
The Town Council extends its thanks to Kendal United Football Club for their generous support. The clubhouse will be open for attendees to use the facilities. However, please be aware that parking is limited, so alternative transport is recommended where possible.
🎶 Friday 9th May – VE Day Tea Dance (Now Fully Booked)
From 2:00pm to 4:00pm, the spirit of the 1940s will return to Kendal Town Hall with a VE Day Tea Dance, featuring a live performance from the Kendal Concert Big Band. Period dress is positively encouraged — and it promises to be a lively, nostalgic afternoon of music, dancing, and celebration.
🎟️ Please note: This event is now fully booked.
These events offer a chance to reflect on the sacrifices made 80 years ago, and to come together in gratitude and hope for a peaceful future. We hope you’ll join us in making VE Day 2025 a memorable occasion for Kendal.
