Have you visited our much-loved Farmers Market? It runs in our Market Place on the last Friday of every month.
This week we’re shining the spotlight on Mrs Kirkham’s Cheese!
The famous Mrs Kirkham’s Cheese is stocked in some of Britain’s finest retailers up and down the country including Harrods, Booths, Waitrose and Neal’s Yard.
The Kirkhams are the very last farmhouse producer of raw-milk Lancashire cheese! Their award winning raw cow’s milk cheese is still made by hand to the same recipe used in 1978, and is made 7 days a week using only the milk from their own herd of Holstein Friesian cows. The cheese is best known for its inimitable crumbly-yet-creamy texture – a texture the Kirkham family call ‘buttery crumble’.
The Kirkham family has resided at Beesley Farm for just over 70 years. Graham’s father John moved there with his family as a baby. The first Cheese was made there by Ruth (Mrs Kirkham) in September 1978 and is still being made right there on the farm today! The Business is now run by Ruth and John’s son Graham with the help of his partner Kellie, son’s Shaun and Mike and a handful of great staff. Beesley Farm is nestled just on the outskirts of Goosnargh Village looking out over the beautiful Beacon Fell. Hard work and persistence for quality enabled the family to build a new Cheese making dairy in 2008, with a state of the art milking parlour and five star accommodation for their now 100 strong herd of cows.
You can find Mrs Kirkham’s Cheese at Kendal Farmers Market (9am-3pm) on the last Friday of the month.
