Businesses in Kendal are taking part in #yourewelcomekendal, a campaign to promote all the fantastic cafes, restaurants, pubs, bars, producers and food retailers in the town.
We’ve been catching up with the people behind the businesses to find out why they love what they do.
Catherine Connor is chair of Kendal Farmers’ Market, as well as being co-director of Lovingly Artisan bakery. Lovingly Artisan, based at Plumgarths, near Kendal, always has a stall at the farmers’ market, which is held in the Market Place on the last Friday of each month.
The market attracts traders from across Cumbria, as well as Lancashire and North Yorkshire, selling everything from chowder made with fish from Morecambe Bay to farmhouse cheeses and delightfully sweet cakes and other delicacies.
“Kendal Farmers’ Market is a community of farmers and British producers, all based around the outskirts of Kendal,” says Catherine.
“We come together each month to set up the market in the town’s Market Place and sell our produce. It’s a way of showcasing a really amazing array of food and drink. It’s a great place for anyone who is inspired by food that is grown, made and reared with love and care.
“It’s an opportunity for people to get together and to communicate around food. Food is a conversation that everyone can be involved in. We love coming here to meet other producers and hear their ideas and to have the chance to talk to people and help them learn more about all these fantastic, independent local traders.
“The range of products is very diverse. We’ve got honeys from Cumbria, beautiful cheeses, fish, sausages, locally reared meat, cakes, a greengrocer, pies and even a florist. There really is something for everybody and something to fit everybody’s budget.”
