Kendal has officially launched its bid to become the UK’s Town of Culture — a national title that could bring major investment into cultural events, creativity and community projects across the town.

If successful, the title would come with £3 million to help deliver a year of cultural activity, with additional funding also available for runners-up.

What is the Town of Culture bid all about?

The bid is being coordinated by the Kendal Town of Culture Partnership, bringing together local organisations and cultural leaders with a shared aim: to celebrate what makes Kendal special and support a programme that benefits residents, businesses and visitors alike.

It’s not just about “arts” in the traditional sense, the partnership’s message is that culture is also about Kendal’s identity and everyday life: from food and farming heritage to markets and community celebrations.

Why it matters for Kendal

A Town of Culture programme can:

  • shine a spotlight on Kendal’s creative energy and rich heritage

  • bring more events, performances and experiences into the town

  • support local businesses through increased footfall across a longer period

  • help boost pride, connection and opportunity for local people

The partnership has also highlighted the importance of using the bid to support the whole community, including tackling challenges faced in many towns — and ensuring culture is accessible and meaningful for everyone.

How you can get involved

The Town of Culture Partnership is inviting local people to share ideas and feedback as part of shaping the bid, ahead of the application deadline of 31 March.

Whether you’re a resident, a business, a community group, a student, or someone who simply loves Kendal — this is a chance to help influence what a future cultural programme could look like.

What it could mean for visitors

Kendal is already a brilliant place to visit for festivals, food, history, independent shopping and culture — and a Town of Culture programme could add even more reasons to plan a trip, across multiple seasons.

It also reinforces Kendal’s role as a gateway town for Lake District holidays, offering year-round experiences (including plenty to do when the weather isn’t ideal for the fells).

Keep up with what’s on in Kendal

Whatever happens with the bid, Kendal’s calendar is already packed with great events. You can explore upcoming listings — and add your own events — via the Kendal Events Calendar here on the Visit Kendal website.

  1. Cumbria Writer’s Collective was formed last year as a not for profit organisation to bring together authors from in and around Cumbria to share their experiences, expertise and to support local writers. At our stand at the Westmoreland Show last September, we encouraged people, who were interested in writing, to pick up their pens and write. Our first Kendal Book Festival, is on Saturday 12 September 2026 at the Parish Hall. Here authors will display their work and share their writing experiences with local people. Workshops at the festival will encourage others to write, to get published and to understand the world of writing. We hope that this festival will help to enhance Kendal’s culture.
