About
Join us for a special curator-led tour of Expanding Landscapes: Painting After Land Art, guided by Art Historian Joy Sleeman and curator Tim Martin.
Joy Sleeman, co-curator of the exhibition, is a leading authority on Land Art and has lectured and published widely on artists who engage directly with the landscape. Sleeman is currently the Director of Research at the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL.
Tim Martin, a curator with over two decades of experience, is known for curating exhibitions that explore the human connection with the natural world. Martin was involved in the setup of Hestercombe Gallery in Somerset where this exhibition originated, and continues to champion work that responds to people’s relationship with places and landscapes.
This unique tour offers insight into the making of Expanding Landscapes and the practices of the artists featured – from pioneering Land Art figures to contemporary voices redefining the genre.
The exhibition includes works by Andy Goldsworthy, Nancy Holt, Helene Appel, Hannah Brown, Sam Douglas, and Robert Smithson, among others. At the heart of the exhibition is Goldsworthy’s Blencathra Mountain, Cumbria, 19 February 1988 – a romantic painting expressed through natural materials and photography.
Don’t miss this opportunity to experience the exhibition through the eyes of its curators and deepen your understanding of how artists continue to engage with land, material and meaning.
This curators talk is included with gallery admission and free for Lakeland Arts members.
