Watch the cows being milked from the cafe at Low Sizergh Barn near Kendal

Just north of Kendal, Low Sizergh Barn is as much a fun day out as it is to stock up on local produce. Situated on a working farm, the beautifully converted traditional Lakeland barn is a treasure trove of great food, drink and hand-picked gifts. You’ll find locally reared meat and locally grown veg, cheese, breads, a wide range of speciality food and drink, and even raw milk decanted straight from the dairy cows. If you’ve time, explore the nature trail or stop off in the tearoom – you might even be able to watch the cows come in for milking.

Take the A591 towards Windermere and you’ll come across Plumgarths Farm Shop & Café – another local favourite right en-route to Windermere and the Lake District. Here you’ll find a range of Cumbrian food specialties including quality local beef, salt marsh lamb, artisan breads and free-range eggs fresh from the farm. The 2 Sisters Café makes this a well worthy port of call for a hungry crew.
