Abbot Hall Art Gallery is a wonderful experience for all who are interested in art. There are also opportunities for family learning – with a dedicated family space, trails and discovery bags containing everything you need to investigate the art.

The Georgian Rooms and 18th century paintings at Abbot Hall Art Gallery

WORKS BY GEORGE ROMNEY

A highlight of any visit to Abbot Hall is the comprehensive collection of George Romney’s work. George Romney (1734 – 1802) was one of the greatest of all 18th century portrait painters. The story of Romney’s early career in Kendal is told through the display, amongst 18th century furniture and porcelain, and other 18th/19th century works.

Watercolour fans will love the small gallery reminiscent of a collector’s private room – with regularly changing displays that allow a Turner to be seen alongside a Ruskin, or a Constable sketch alongside works by the likes of Cotman, Cozens and Edward Lear.
