Businesses in Kendal are taking part in #yourewelcomekendal, a campaign to promote all the fantastic cafes, restaurants, pubs, bars, producers and food retailers in the town.

We’ve been catching up with the people behind the businesses to find out why they love what they do.

Cherith and Nigel Platt are the proprietors of Baba Ganoush, in Berrys Yard, Kendal. Baba Ganoush consists of a vegetarian cafe and soup kitchen serving food for dining in and takeout.

“We came to Baba Ganoush from another cafe named Hot Mango that we’d had in Ulverston,” says Cherith.

“We started with the shop with a deli which is where the vegetarian cafe is now. We didn’t have seating originally, but demand for it grew and we bought the soup kitchen because we needed more space for seating and the general day-to-day running of the business.

“We have a lot of local regulars, as well as holidaymakers who return over the summer and Easter. We’ve been here 13 years, so you get to know people and people get to know you and they know what kind of food and service they can expect.”

“Feeding the masses is our philosophy really,” says Nigel.

“We like to tout ourselves as doing fairly fast, fresh food, competitively priced. We’re very passionate about providing good quality, fresh food, and tasty meals to takeaway.

“Between us we’ve got many years experience in the industry and we’ve travelled quite a bit and absorbed lots of influences from around the world.

“What we offer is very eclectic. We’re interested in all types of cuisine and we come up with ideas that we think will be popular. There’s about a 50/50 split between vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. We do a lot of salad boxes, which are very popular, quiche, soup, grilled sandwiches and whatever else takes our fancy really.

“I think we’ve been successful over the years because we can genuinely cook and we keep coming up with new and tasty things for people to try. Everything we do is made from scratch except the bread which we buy in. It’s a matter of thinking about what people want to eat, preparing it as well as possible and making the service as quick and as prompt as we can for them.”
